MONTGOMERY- Springwood's magical season came to an end last Thursday at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery as the Wildcats fell to Evangel 38-28 in the AISA 8 -man State Championship Game.
Springwood struck first and jumped out to an 8-0 lead on a Johnathan "Jon Jon" Johnson touchdown run followed by Cayden Cook's 2-point conversion, but unfortunately could not hold the lead in the second half.
The Wildcats brought a huge crowd to Montgomery and never stopped cheering on Springwood all the way up to the end.
"It was a great ride, very satisfying, and happy to be part of this unbelievable season. I hate that it didn't end in a state championship, but like I told our kids it was a good experience, and I am so proud of our coaches, and players", said Springwood's Head Football Joey Burch.
Evangel iced the game with a pick-six with under a minute remaining in the game to give the Lions a State Championship.
Springwood moved the ball very efficiently, but just put the ball on the ground too many times, and in the end, those mistakes cost the Wildcats.
For Springwood this was a season that the community will never forget. After going 1-9 a year ago, the Wildcats were just a few plays away from being state champs. For the kids in the program that have endured so many losses, and multiple coaches, but never gave up. Talk about a great metaphor for life. It's not how you start, but rather it's how you finish.
Shout out to the 2022 Springwood Football Team, your community is very proud.
