Cause of Death Of LaFayette Man Confirmed

On September 10, 2022, at around 8am, the LaFayette Police Department and

EMS received a call to Brookwood SE, near the city cemetery, in reference to a

deceased male.


The deceased male was found hanging from a tree. There was no

sign of foul play. The male was described as a slender white male, between 30-40

- years old, with brown hair and beard, wearing a navy blue shirt, brown pants, and

black shoes. There was no identification found on the decedent.


The decedent was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Montgomery for an Autopsy to determine the cause of death. Due to Fingerprint Analysis, it was determined the

decedent was 38 years old, Mark David Spence of Lanett, Al. Mr. Spence had

been living in the Lafayette area with a friend. Mr. Spence had left the residence

without his whereabouts being known. Mr. Spence was last seen a week prior to

him being found.


On September 19, 2022, the cause of death of Mark David Spence was ruled a

suicide by hanging. Mr. Spence's family has been notified and on behalf of the

LaFayette Police department, we ask you to please keep his family and friends in your

thoughts and prayers throughout this difficult time.
