LANETT- On Friday, Lanett Officers responded to a shooting, as one of their own was under fire. Lanett Interim Police Chief Richard Casner spoke to the LaFayette Ledger following the incident.
"On October 28, 2022, at approximately 8 PM the Lanett Police Department was dispatched to the 1600 block of Tanyard Road in reference to a verbal dispute.
Once the officer arrived on the scene, they observed one Stefanus Benecke on the porch of the residence. As the officer was preparing to exit their patrol car Benecke discharged his firearm into the patrol vehicle. The officer was able to reposition the vehicle out of the line of fire and other members of law enforcement responded to the scene", said Casner.
Benecke was taken into custody and charged with the attempted murder of the police officer. He was transported to the Chambers County Detention Facility where he is currently being held. The officer did not sustain any injuries, and the name of the officer will not be released at this time.
Lanett Police Department would like to thank Valley Police Department, Chambers County Sheriff’s Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Department, and Lanett Fire and EMS for their assistance in this case.
