Mrs. Gypsy Lee Poore, age 84, of Lanett, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, July 26th, 2022 at EAMC Lanier Hospital in Valley, Alabama.


Mrs. Poore was born on September 3rd, 1937 in Chambers County, Alabama. She was of the Baptist faith and was a loving wife, mother, and MawMaw to everyone who knew her. She loved her holidays, family gatherings, and cooking big meals for all. She will be so missed. Please keep her in your prayers as she did everyone known and unknown to her.


Mrs. Poore was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James D. Poore; sons, David Poore, and James M. Poore, and grandchild, Miles Sheppard.


She is survived by her daughter, Amanda Luke; son, Billy Poore (Shirley); grandchildren, Dusty Luke, Kelly Luke, Chris Poore (Erin), Nikki Poore, Kasey Poore, Brent Sheppard (Corvelyn) Amber Sheppard, Misty Poore, Amy Poore, and Angel-Ann Poore; twenty-two great- grand-children; four beloved great-great-grandchildren. ; brother, Gary West (Elva); many nieces and nephews.


Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 29th, 2022 at 3:00 PM (EDT) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Mrs. Poore’s family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 2:00 PM (EDT) until the service hour at the funeral home.

Joan Elizabeth Singleton Bryant of Lanett, Alabama was called to her eternal home with the Lord on Saturday, July 23, 2022, after spending an evening surrounded by family and friends. She was 85 years old.


She was born on June 6, 1937, to the late Elder Lee Singleton and Frances Sedinger Singleton.


Mrs. Bryant was a member of the First Christian Church of Lanett and spent many years in the faithful service of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and donating her time to many ministries and helping those in need.


Ms. Bryant was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Nick Bryant, her parents Elder Lee Singleton, and Frances Sedinger Singleton, sisters Carolyn Coleman and Ann Hawkins, brother Lee Singleton, nephew Jason Coleman, and great niece Cara Marie Coleman.


She is survived by nephews, John (Laura) Coleman of Phenix City, AL, Scott (Brandi) Coleman of Cedar Park, TX, and Marion Hawkins of Moreland, GA, and nieces, Angel (Chip) Thompson of Orlando, FL, and Lia Hawkins of Moreland, GA, great nieces Kaylan Hart of Salem, AL, Abby Thompson of Orlando, FL, Caylee and Chloe Coleman of Phenix City, AL, and great-nephews David Coleman of Jonestown, TX, Ryan Coleman of Cedar Park, TX, and Colin Thompson of Orlando, FL.


The funeral service will be held on Friday, July 29, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. EDT, at First Christian Church in Lanett, preceded by a visitation from 10:00 A.M. EDT until 11:00 A.M. EDT in the church chapel. The Reverend David Bradshaw will officiate. A private graveside service and burial will follow the funeral service.


The family asks that instead of flowers, donations be made to the First Christian Church of Lanett, so the church may continue its ministry and help those in need.

Mr. Doyle Nelson, age 84, of Fredonia, Alabama passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022, at the Arbor Springs Nursing Home in Opelika, Alabama.


Mr. Nelson was born in West Point, Georgia on June 15, 1938, to the late C.T. Nelson and Vernice McCollum Nelson. He was also preceded in death by his wife Margie Nelson.


Doyle attended New Hope Baptist Church and became a member at a young age.


Mr. Nelson worked in various capacities for the Uniroyal Tire Manufacturing Plant in Opelika, Alabama for approximately 30 years before his retirement.


He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He loved to hunt, especially turkey hunting. He enjoyed fishing and was a phenomenal woodworking craftsman.


Doyle is survived by his siblings Janice (Mike) Munn, Lynn Haven, FL., Charles (Marie) Nelson, Five Points, AL.; nephews, Tim (Sevetlana) Nelson, Bob Nelson, Nelson Munn; great-nieces and great-nephews, Grayson, Hayden, Sarah Camille, and Nelson (April) Munn, Jake Nelson, Olivia Kadorava.


Services will be private.

Bluffton Funeral Services announces of George Callaway Zachry, Sr. passed away peacefully at West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange, Georgia, on July 21, 2022.


Mr. Zachry was born October 28, 1927, in West Point, Georgia, the second son of the late George Huguley and Sara Pope Callaway Zachry.


He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-seven years, Valma Kemp Zachry; brother, James T. (Jim) Zachry; daughter, Elizabeth McKinney; granddaughter, Shannon Duck Robinson; and son-in-law, Mark Dalusky.


He is survived by his children: Carolyn Dalusky of Athens, GA, George C. Zachry, Jr. (Margaret) of Pine Mountain, GA, and Rebecca Hales (Clay) of Johns Creek, GA.

Seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren survive including Zach Duck (Kimberly) of Athens, GA; Fletcher McKinney (Jessica), and boys Eli, Cullen, and Liam of Robertsdale, AL; Cary McKinney of Alexander City, AL; Mary King Kurrass (Jason), and daughters Sophie, Lilly, and Lucy of Pine Mountain, GA; George Callaway Zachry, III of Pine Mountain, GA; Alice Hales-Kharazmi (Shervin), and children Sam and Jane of Atlanta, GA; and Richard Hales (Laney) of Milton, GA.


Mr. Zachry graduated from West Point High School in 1945, and treasured lifelong friendships beginning in these school days, keeping in touch over all the years through personal correspondence and reunions with his classmates.


Following high school, Mr. Zachry attended Georgia Institute of Technology in the 1945/46 school year and Mercer University from 1946 - 1949. While at Mercer Mr. Zachry was active in the Glee Club, the Red Cross, F.B.L.A., the Ciceronian Literary Society, the Alpha Phi Omega National Honor Service Fraternity (treasurer in 1948), Cluster (the campus weekly newspaper), and Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.


In 1949 Mr. Zachry returned to the family business, Zachry Brothers, in West Point with his father George H. Zachry, and partners, brother Jim, and cousin Griggs.


On November 18, 1951, Mr. Zachry married Valma R. Kemp. He and Valma started a family right away, having their four children by 1957. He was a devoted father and husband who treasured family time whether it was Sunday romps in the woods, weeklong trips to the beach, or the epic two-week Zachry family adventure to California and back with Valma and all four kids piled into the station wagon.


Throughout his adult life, helping and caring for others occupied Mr. Zachry. He is remembered for delivering Meals on Wheels to shut-ins and reaching out to those in need, even after he moved into assisted living. He was devoted to his church, attending every Sunday he was able. Studying and sharing God’s word gave him joy as he faithfully taught Sunday school for the Men’s Bible Study Class. He was always ready to share his lesson notes with those that were not able to attend.


For decades Mr. Zachry was active in the Lions Club of West Point, helping organize programs, raising money with sales, and hosting visitors from around the world through the Lions Club International Youth exchange.


Over the years Mr. Zachry nurtured and maintained a passion for researching and preserving local history. As an active member of the Chattahoochee Valley Historical Society, he contributed his own writings, shared stories and served on the board, and was treasurer for the Chambers County Book Committee. As an esteemed member of the Society, in 2001 he was conferred life membership for his “outstanding service and long, unwavering support for the purposes and endeavors of the Society”.


Mr. Zachry’s family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Joseph R. Downs, III, MD for a lifetime of friendship and attentive care. We are also grateful to Gary Freeman, Corey Norrell, and all the aides at Lakewood Senior Living of Valley, Alabama for the loving care Mr. Zachry received for the past ten years while he lived there.


Arrangements A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church of West Point, GA at 11:00 AM EDT, Rev. Erik May's

Officiant. The family will greet friends for visitation before the service at 10:00 AM EDT in the Zachry Center at the Church.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at West Point First United Methodist Church, 306 East 7th Street, West Point, Georgia 31833.

Services have been entrusted to Bluffton Funeral Services, Lanett, Alabama.


Davis Memorial Mortuary announces the passing of Mr. Zil Maxi, a resident of Lanett, AL, and native of Haiti, who passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022, at his residence.

Jeff Jones Funeral Home announces the passing of Mr. Eddie Gooden 86 of LaFayette, Alabama passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at his residence.


Mr. Gooden was born in LaFayette on January 17, 1936, to the late Eddie Lee Gooden, Sr., and the late Pearlie Simpson Gooden he was a member of LaFayette Heights Baptist Church and retired from West Point Pepperell as a printer after 35 years of service.


Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at LaFayette Heights Baptist Church with burial in the LaFayette City Cemetery with The Rev. Paul Howard and the Rev. Perry Walls officiating.

He is survived by his wife Catherine Gooden, 4 children Judy Gooden, Ricky (Janet) Gooden, Donna Gooden, Christopher (Pam) Gooden, 3 sisters Wynelle Talley, Gearline Trimble, Yvonne (Pee Wee) Jessup, grandchildren Mitch (Chole) Gooden, Jessica (Brian) Mitchell, Eric (Amber) Gooden, Malia (Phillip) Beane, Ashley (Anthony) Hutchinson, Josh (Megan) Gooden, Amanda (Charlie) Suder, Heather Gooden, Jeremiah Gooden, Lee Crowder, Adam Gooden, Noah Gooden, Morgan Gooden, Justin Gooden, Brittney Gooden, and 23 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.
