Johnson Brown Funeral Home announces the passing of Mr. James LaFayette Samples, 91, a lifelong resident of Valley, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at the George H. Lanier Nursing Home in Valley, Alabama, where he had resided for the past nine years.


Mr. Samples was born on May 22, 1930, in Chambers County, Alabama to the late Charlie Warner Samples and Minnie Francis Jones Samples. He was also preceded in death by his wife Louise Nannie Williams Samples.


He was one of the founding members of the Fredonia Community Holiness Church and was very active in the church before his health declined.


He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was retired from West Point Pepperell where he had worked in both the Shawmut and Lanett Mills.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 2:00P.M. EDT at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley with interment following in Hillcrest Cemetery. Brother Milford McClain officiating. Visitation will be on Friday beginning at 1:00P.M. EDT.

Mr. Thomas Frank Wilkinson, III, age 69, of Lanett, Alabama passed away on May 16th, 2022 in Gadsden, Alabama.


Frank was born on June 13th, 1952 in Langdale, Alabama to the late T. Frank Wilkinson, Jr. and Ann W. Wilkinson. He was a member of Heritage Place Church of Christ in Irondale, Alabama. He was a 1970 graduate of West Point High School and then attended Kansas State University, the University of Alabama, and Auburn University. He worked as a User Consultant for University of Alabama Birmingham for over forty years.


He is survived by his siblings, Jayne Jay (T.J.) and Robert Wilkinson (Judy); niece, Noelle Wilkinson (Kevin Hickey); nephew, Robby Wilkinson.


Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 19th, 2022 at 2:00 PM EDT at the graveside in Marseilles Cemetery in West Point, Georgia. Dr. Wayne Kilpatrick will officiate. Frank's family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM EDT at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Lanett. A reception will be held immediately following the service at the Wilkinson Lake Cabin on Lake Harding.


In lieu of flowers, Frank's family asks that donations be made to one’s favorite charity in his memory.

Harold Grant May, Jr.,who passed on May 12th, at St. Martens in the Pines Hospice in Birmingham, AL. He was the son of the late Harold Grant May, Sr. and Marie Baldwin May. He is survived by his sister, Carole Diane May and his aunt, Jewel May of Huntsville, and many cousins.


Grant was a graduate of the University of Alabama where he was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. Having a lifelong love of flowers and design, Grant worked at several Birmingham florists before purchasing Park Lane Flowers in English Village and Crestwood in Birmingham. He served many loyal customers and was published in Southern Lady, Tea Times, Victorian Lady and Southern Living Christmas Books.


Private graveside services will be held at Resthaven Cemetery with the Reverend Chuck Anderson officiating. Donations may be made to Shawmut First Baptist Church or to the American Cancer Society in his memory.

Mr. Phillip Gregory Harlin, 67, of Lanett, Alabama passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022, at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.


Mr. Harlin was born on December 18, 1954 in Langdale, Alabama.

Phillip grew up in Lanett, Alabama and he graduated from Lanett High School in 1973. He went on to further his education at Southern Union Community College. He attended the Lanett First Baptist Church.


Over the years he worked for the MeadWestvaco Corporation, the West Point Foundry, and A&P grocers.


He was a man who loved life enjoyed making other people laugh.


He loved traveling and he enjoyed searching for treasures with his metal detector.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years Paula Harlin; son, Jason (Katie) Harlin, Opelika; grandchildren, Whitley Kate Harlin, Addie Jane Harlin; brother, Gene (Brenda) Harlin, Dan (Gail) Harlin; stepmother, Elizabeth Harlin.


Graveside services were held on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at 11:00A.M. EDT at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Vines Funeral Home announces the passing of Mr. John Thomas (Moon) Tucker, Jr., 57, of Roanoke died Sunday, May 15, 2022 at his residence. Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery, Roanoke at 2:00 p.m. (CST) with Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating. Public viewing will be at Vines Funeral Home, Friday, May 20, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. (CST) to 6:00 p.m. (CST). Mr. Tucker was born in Roanoke to the late John Thomas Tucker, Sr. and Dessie B. Tucker. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Roanoke and a 1984 graduate of Handley High School. He also attended Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville and was employed by Johnson Landscaping, Roanoke. Mr. Tucker is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years: Brenda Patterson Tucker, Roanoke; four daughters: Jasmine (Shimir) Johnson, LaGrange, GA, Pamela Staples and Jamiah Hughley both of Roanoke and Angela Jones, Montgomery; three sons: Alan Bumbrey, Jr., Dijon Tucker and Sean Spence all of Roanoke; father figure to Kyle and Deshawn McFarlin Zaire Hughley, Shane & Tiffeny Littles all of Roanoke; four siblings: Larry (Evelyn) Tucker, Memphis, TN, James Tucker and Doris (Quarterrio) Williams both of Roanoke and Betty Potts, LaGrange, GA; one aunt: Bonnie Sue Paige, Roanoke; nine grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Jeff Jones Funeral Home announces the passing of Jimmie Sue Smith Hill, 78, of Valley, Alabama passed away at East Alabama Medical Center - Lanier on May 16, 2022.


Jimmie Sue is survived by her daughter Constance Hill (Tony Poole) of LaGrange, Georgia; son, Michael Hill of Cusseta, Alabama; and daughter, Brandi Hill Worthy (Larry Sands) of Lanett, Alabama; granddaughters, Shannon Duncan of Houston, Texas; Katie (Drew) Atkins of Franklin, Georgia; Emily Hill of Atlanta, Georgia; Bethany Hill of Lagrange, Georgia; Shelby Worthy of Valley, Alabama; and great-grandsons Cam Bishop, Hudson Atkins and Louis Kirby; brother Johnny (Freddie) Smith, sisters Charlene (John) Steverson and Barbara Roberts, and brothers-in-law, Sanders Fomby and Harold (Jean) Hill. She was predeceased by her husband, Jimmy Hill of LaFayette, Alabama, and parents, Tom & Ximenia Smith of New Site, Alabama, and sisters, Tommie Ruth Romine, Janice Fomby, and brother, Allen Smith.


Jimmie Sue was a member of Center Baptist Church in LaFayette, Alabama.
