Mrs. Phillips was born in Randolph County, Alabama on September 11, 1934, to the late William Young Jones and Nannie Reevie Hill Jones. Mertis also had ten siblings that preceded her in death. Her brothers were William David Jones, Winnon L. Jones, Walter Howard Jones, Charlie Ford Jones, Willard Chester Jones, James Robert (Bill) Jones, Frankie Ralph Jones, and John Henry Jones. Her sisters were Ertis Nannie Lou Jones and Ruth Diane Jones.
She married Curtis Wilbur Phillips of West Point, Georgia on January 10, 1954. A union in marriage that lasted almost 60 years. She and Curtis were both members of Bethel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Phillips enjoyed teaching the children at church in Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She retired from the Playtex Corporation. She enjoyed baking, sewing, and different crafts.
She is survived by her sons Michael Curtis Phillips and his wife, Susan Rice Phillips, Charles Wilbur Phillips and his wife, Deborah Washington Phillips; grandchildren, Amy M. Phillips Campione, Katherine (Shelley) Phillips Neal, Gary Curtis Phillips, Michael Scott Phillips, Joe William Phillips; great-grandchildren, Hannah Michelle Campione, Megan Nicole Campione, Brayden Michael Neal, Clayton William Neal, Kaylynn Rochelle Neal, Kevin Charles Phillips, Madylin Claire Neal; a host of extended family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. EST at Bethel United Methodist Church in West Point, Georgia with interment in the adjoining cemetery. The Reverend Lamar Womack officiated. The family will greet friends at the church on Saturday from 1:00 P.M. EST until the service hour.
Flowers will be kindly accepted or the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church in her memory.
