Tuscaloosa- New season, new mindset, and a new beginning... That was the motto of this year's Springwood Football team, and on Friday the Wildcats defeated North River 52-8, capturing its first region title since 2001.
Springwood Senior's Ben Cooper, Jonathan "Jon Jon" Johnson, and Cayden Cook had huge games to lead the Wildcats to victory.
Cooper completed 7 of 9 for 79 yards through the air, Meanwhile Johnson rushed for 67 yards on 13 carries, and two touchdowns. Cook reeled in 2 catches for 62 yards and a score.
What changed? Was it Springwood moving to 8-man football? Perhaps, but maybe the answer was more about a mindset, and dare I say changing the culture. Springwood first-year head coach Joey Burch, and his staff did just that. From summer workouts to a winning mindset Springwood football is back.
Springwood will roll into the playoffs as a number-one seed.
"We are just excited, Great team win. Our senior leadership showed up all season long, and it could not come at a better time. Like everybody else, we were a little banged up, but we had a lot of our younger kids step up, and fill some roles that we hope will help us for a possible deep playoff run. We now have two weeks to get healthy and heal up some injuries", said Burch.
Springwood will host a playoff game on Friday, November 11th from Wildcat Stadium.
